Preventive conservation

Our Approach

For decades museums have known that overall prevention of damage to collections is preferable to individual treatment of objects after damage has occurred. The challenge has been providing appropriate means and methods to do this. While the causes of damage to heritage are well understood, the methods for addressing that damage systematically, effectively and sustainably are not.

ICCROM continues to develop and share tools that respond to the hows and whys of preventive conservation. These tools, including methods for risk management and reorganization of collection storage facilities, have been built in collaboration with leading institutions in the field and tested in interactive courses worldwide. ICCROM’s tools are designed to respect traditional know-how, local knowledge, and cultural diversity.
